Join SCORE and The Outside Foundation in creating Oyster Reefs and planting Spartina alterniflora grass! This will be done through the deployment of oyster shell bags recycled from local restaurants and bagged by The Outside Foundation. These recycled oyster shell bags will act as a substrate for oyster larvae to attach to and grow on. Volunteers assist in loading shell bags onto SCDNR boats, deploy them onto designated shorelines, and finally lock them in with rebar. Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes. We will get MUDDY and WET, so dress accordingly. All volunteers must RSVP ahead of time in order to secure your spot as slots are limited.
Volunteer requirements include:
-Must sign volunteer waiver form before volunteering
-Must be at least 14 years old to participate (with parental consent)
-Comfortable lifting heavy objects (20-40lbs)
-Comfortable with strenuous tasks in summer conditions
-Comfortable riding on boats, getting wet, and working in saltmarsh environments , including standing on uneven surfaces and working in pluff mud.
-Must wear closed-toe shoes when volunteering (NO CROCS, NO WATERSHOES OR EXPOSED SKIN ON FEET; boots or old sneakers work well!)
-Highly encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle and wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. We'll have a water refill station on site.
