The SCORE Community-Based team is excited to deploy Manufactured Wire Reefs (MWR) with Coastal Conservation League. These MWRs will be a substrate for oyster larvae to land and grow on; this process is called recruitment. Volunteers will help deploy MWRs filled with recycled oyster shells and coconut coir to help fortify shorelines against erosion, filter water, and act as habitat for juvenile oysters as well as 120+ different species that inhabit oyster reefs. MWR deployments are very physical, and often in hot and muddy conditions. Bug spray, gloves, water, sunscreen and other needed materials will be provided.
Volunteer requirements include:
-Must sign volunteer waiver form before volunteering
-Must be at least 10 years old to participate (with parental consent no supervision)
-Comfortable lifting heavy objects (20-40lbs)
-Comfortable with strenuous tasks in summer conditions
-Must wear closed-toe shoes when volunteering (NO CROCS, NO WATERSHOES OR EXPOSED SKIN ON FEET; boots or old sneakers work well!)
-Highly encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle and wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. We'll have a water refill station on site.
